Packt Publishing today announced Joomla! as the winner of Best PHP Open Source Content Management System for 2007.
The award marks the second time Joomla! has won a prestigious Packt prize. Runners up were Drupal, followed by e107.
The judges indicated that Joomla! is 'possibly one of the biggest success stories in
open source of late'. Its first release came in only September 2005 and since
then has grown to be one of the most downloaded Content Management Systems on the
web.
The
judges also noted a number of factors that helped Joomla! secure the Award.
Most notably its good front-end for administrators and end-users, which
gives users a simple and traditional company website straight out of
the box. Once again, judges commented on the size and responsiveness of
the community, which translates to potential problems being dealt with
quickly.
Joomla! Project Manager Johan Janssens said adding this latest award to Joomla's steadily growing collection of prizes was recognition of the project as a whole.
While I can't pretend to read judges minds, I'm sure Joomla's wealth of community and focus on creating the foundations of a next generation framework, demonstrated the true strengths of the project, he said.
I'd also like to thank Packt for its continued support through its publications and awards. Packt understands open source spirit, that's for sure.
NEWSFLASH: Packt confirmed that Joomla! 1.5 (despite still being in Release Candidate) was basis for their decision. Great news for anyone still sitting on the fence, wondering just how good the new generation framework is!
Joomla! 1.5 RC3 [codename: Takriban] is now available for download. We've had the 'Red Barchetta' release candidate, then Endelo RC (meaning development, progress ... improvement). Takriban means 'almost, nearly'. Well folks we're almost, nearly there. Stable is getting very close. It's roughly 10 weeks since RC1 and five weeks since RC2 and thanks to valuable community feedback, there have been improvements and bug fixes. The uptake of Joomla! 1.5 has been incredible, with many people diving in to the new API and finding ways to make it sing. The current Joomla! 1.5 template competition (http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/board,479.0.html) has further fuelled interest, as has the number of 1.5 native extensions finding their way onto the Joomla! Extensions Directory (http://extensions.joomla.org/) . Joomla! 1.5 is really gaining momentum.
With the release of the eagerly anticipated Joomla! 1.5, the time has
come to allow one of the skilled designers in our midst to become a
part of the success that will be Joomla! 1.5. The Joomla! 1.5
Template Contest is open to anyone with a passion for design and a
desire to have their design seen and used by millions of people globally as they
download and install the stable release of Joomla! 1.5.
Contest Prizes
The five finalists will each receive a Joomla! prize package that includes a
Joomla! laptop bag, Joomla! shirt, Joomla! hat, and a Joomla! 256MB USB memory stick.
The grand prize winner will have his/her template added as the third template to the Joomla! 1.5 core distribution to be downloaded in every Joomla! 1.5 package.
Contest Timeline
The Joomla! 1.5 Template Contest procedure will be very similar to the Joomla! Logo Contest from 2005:
Contestants will have until the 22nd of September 2007 to submit their designs via a contest thread set up in the Joomla! forums.
Entries are submitted by way of a post titled Template Contest Entries which includes a
brief introduction to your design and a link to the template package. The template package must be available without registration and must be available until the five finalists have been announced.
At 23:59 GMT on the 22nd of September 2007 the thread will be locked and no further entries will be allowed.
The Core Team will go through all contest entries and create a short list of
their favourite 5 designs that meet the design and technical
requirements of the Template Contest.
At 23:59 GMT October 6th
2007 the contest finalists will be revealed in a poll thread on the Joomla!
Forums and all five templates will be made available via a demo site provided for
the duration of the voting period.
Forum members will have exactly one week, until the 23:59 GMT October 13th 2007 to cast a vote for their favourite design.
The winner of the competition will be revealed in the final release of Joomla! 1.5.
Contest Rules and Requirements
Template packages must be installable via the Joomla! 1.5 extension installer.
All template files must be licensed under the GNU/GPL version 2.
Templates must be an original work of the person making the design entry.
Templates must run natively in Joomla! 1.5. They must not require Legacy Mode in order to function.
Templates must use the Joomla! sample content as-is and not require any moving/modifying of modules/content.
Templates must utilize at least one Joomla! 1.5 template parameter.
Templates must provide an example of custom module chrome or template overriding.
Templates must be valid XHTML 1.0 and CSS.
Templates should look and function similarly in Internet Explorer 6+, FireFox, Safari, and Opera.
Templates should not break with any of the sample content.
Core Team members may not submit entries in the template contest.

Joomla! 1.0.13 [ Sunglow ] is now available for download.
Joomla! 1.0.13 features:
Several low-risk security fixes
Improved password storage system
Easier control over Register Globals Emulation
An Itemid backwards compatibility setting
Improved administrative session security
Improved HTTP/HTTPS switchover support
Because Joomla! 1.0.13 is a security release, it is important that you upgrade but we strongly recommend that you take extra precautions when performing this upgrade. This release features several improvements to the password storage system designed to help protect the future security of your Joomla! powered website. These changes will cause compatibility issues with some 3rd Party Extensions, especially bridges. If your Joomla! site utilizes bridges to other applications or
extensions that have their own login system such as Community Builder,
Virtuemart, or others you should not upgrade your site until those
extensions have also been updated.
The changes to the password storage system should be transparent to your Joomla! site's users. As users login for the first time after your site has been upgraded, their passwords will automatically be converted from the old password storage system to the new system. Because of this automatic conversion of passwords, it is important that you backup your entire database before performing this upgrade. Once the process of converting passwords has started, it cannot be reversed.
Release Information
1.0.13 is available as a full package,
which contains all Joomla! files or as patch packages which contain only
the files that have changed since previous Joomla! 1.0.x version.

Post. Comment. Complain. Request. Rant. If it has to do with Drupal on Sun (Solaris, Sun Fire Servers, etc.), we're interested in your input. In the near future, look for postings on performance, configuration, scaling, documentation, etc. related to Drupal on Sun.

Sorry for the bandwidth. Couldn't resist. It's like watching the odometer turn over on your car. You've just got to honk the horn and yell a bit.
Boy, that's a lot of nodes.
I am hoping by putting up a post here would attract more Malaysia Drupal developer to join our group at http://groups.drupal.org/malaysia. I have also wrote in http://drupal.org/node/160239#comment-262886 regarding our issues.
Anyhow, I will be talking about Drupal in WebmasterMalaysia Gathering 17th November @ Starbucks, KL Sentral.
In addition, we have just uploaded our website Successideaweb.com to commercially support Drupal in Malaysia. We have yet to fine-tune the content and standard complaints, and cross-browser issue. Other freelance developers in Malaysia is welcome to join our team ...
From the M$ release announcement at http://www.iis.net/php/
The IIS Team is eager to announce the official release of Microsoft FastCGI Extension for IIS 6.0 as a free download. For the first time, we are providing hosters and PHP developers full support for a stack of technology that enables reliable, scalable PHP hosting on production Internet Information Services 6.0 (IIS 6) Web servers.
This release could not have come at a more exciting time for the technology: previous beta releases on IIS.NET have had over 17,000 downloads and no less than six hosting partners have already begun offering PHP hosting on IIS 6 with the FastCGI Extension. In addition to the downloads, the IIS community site also has a very active forum of users exchanging ideas and providing feedback about the FastCGI Extension.

As part of our ongoing efforts to support the Drupal.org infrastructure, the Drupal Association has further bulked up our hardware resources with 10 GB of RAM and a new master database server. These improvements will help us deal with the exponential growth curve the Drupal community has been experiencing, and help us prepare for the anticipated growth due to Drupal 6.
The Drupal Association spent approximately $11,000 USD on hardware. To help pay for these upgrades and support the Drupal.org infrastructure, please purchase a membership (individual, organization). Your membership will help the association plan and spend money to support the Drupal.org infrastructure and Drupal events such as Drupalcons for the next 12 months.
